10 days and 9 nights Choquequirao to Machu Picchu Trek

 

This is a breathtaking trek through remote valleys, with stunning scenery of snow-covered Andean peaks, an ancient cloud forest, and abundant wildflowers. Here you will encounter the two spectacular Inca sites of Choquequirao and Machu Picchu, and their wondrous history, architecture, and magnificent beauty.

 
 

Program itinerary.

Day 1: CUSCO - SAYWITE - CAPULIYOK - CHIKISKA
We will leave the city of Cusco at 1:00PM, driving the Pan-American Highway to the town of Cachora. This spectacular drive crosses the mountains and descends into the town of Limatambo (2600m / 8530ft), then continues in the direction of the Cunyac Bridge to cross the Apurimac River, which is the natural border between the Cusco and Apurimac regions. We pass to town of Curahuasi, famous for its aromatic liquor "Macerado de Anis," and one of our stops is at the famous "Stone of Saywite." We arrive at Cachora and spend the night at Los Tres Balcones Hostal.

Day 2: CACHORA CAPULIYOK CHIKISKA
We wake up at 7:00AM to enjoy breakfast at Los Tres Balcones Hostal, then at 8:00AM we drive 30 minutes to Capuliyoc Lookout (2,941masl / 9649 ft) where we will meet our horses and porters and begin our trek. We begin our descent on a path of switchbacks, crossing scrub and a forest of native trees called "Phaty." In about 5 hours, our campsite awaits us at Chikisca (1836m / 6023ft). We can expect a warm night in the valley. Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner

Day 3: CHIKISCA - MARAMPATA - CHOQUEQUIRAO
We leave early in the morning to avoid the midday sun. We descend to the Apurimac River and cross the Playa Rosalinda Bridge. Here our trek to Choquequirao begins. We pass by Santa Rosa, where we meet our good friend who owns agricultural land and a small shop to buy water and rehydrating drinks. We continue uphill until we reach Marampata, which is near Choquequirao. We will have lunch and rest, enjoying the wonderful view of the Apurimac River and Choquequirao, then continue on a path until we arrive at the INC campsite. Dinner and overnight is at the Choquequirao campsite.

Day 4: CHOQUEQUIRAO
After a delicious breakfast, we will have the whole day to explore the ruins of Choquequirao, visiting the principal complex for about 6 hours. We will then return to the campsite to have lunch, and then in the afternoon we will visit the lower part of the complex. Dinner and overnight is at the campsite.

Day 5: CHOQUEQUIRAO - PINCHAUNUYOC - MAIZAL.
We will have a short extra visit to the principal complex before continuing our walk to Pinchiunuyoc. After an uphill stretch through a wood of native trees, we arrive at Pajunal before the descent to Pinchiunuyoc. Here we will have lunch, and cross the bridge at the Río Blanco Stream where we then walk uphill to Maizal. We will have the chance to observe various species of birds. Dinner and overnight is at Maizal.

Day 6: MAIZAL - HIGHPASS MINA VICTORIA - YANAMA
We leave our campsite and continue uphill, crossing a beautiful forest of native trees on a stone path before arriving at the high-pass of Mina Victoria, where we will have a spectacular view of the snow-capped peaks of Choquetacarpo and Pumasillo. We descend to have lunch, and after a brief rest, we continue to the community of Yanama, where we will have dinner and spend the night. Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner

Day 7: YANAMA - ABRA APACHETA - TOTORA
The big day! We leave early and trek up the ravine of the Yanama River. It begins as a gentle slope and becomes steeper and steeper as we approach the high-pass. We can appreciate a beautiful contrast of ecological zones as we arrive at the "puna," lunch right after passing the highest point, and then descend into the Totora River Valley, where we will have dinner and spend the night in the community of Totora.

Day 8: TOTORA - COLPAPAMPA - PLAYA SANTA TERESA
We leave very early in the morning, following the Totora River towards the point where it meets the Chalan River, to then follow it downstream to the Santa Teresa River. Lush vegetation and beautiful waterfalls line our path to the Playa Santa Teresa, where we can enjoy the hot springs.

Day 9: PLAYA SANTA TERESA - - HIDROELECTRICA - AGUAS CALIENTES
After breakfast, we take local transportation to the "Hidroelectrica" to Aguas Calientes. We hike following the rail track for 3 hours, enjoying the lush vegetation of our tropical high jungle until we reach Aguas Calientes.

Day 10: TOUR OF MACHU PICCHU - RETURN TO CUSCO
Early in the morning, we take the bus from the town of Aguas Calientes to the Inca citadel of Machu Picchu. The tour of Machu Picchu will allow us to appreciate the achievements of the Inca civilization. Machu Picchu demonstrates the Inca's supreme understanding of astronomy and architectural design. We will spend as long as possible at the archaeological complex. Afternoon transfer back to Aguas Calientes on time for train check in and travel back to Ollantaytambo (1:50 min), and from here we drive back about 2 hours to Cusco. Meal: Breakfast
